Black & Tan Game Dogs

The black and tan coloration is an uncommon one in the American Pit Bull Terrier but many quality dogs of this colour have existed and I will try and mention some of these. Some bloodlines (and therefore some breeders) seems to produce a higher percentage of black and tans than others. After a bit of research I found the following black and tan gamedogs : – Wolf’s Smutt : Whelped in 1912 out of Noonan’s Fanny and Noona’s Jack. – Shipley’s Boxer : A pure Noonan bred dog whelped in 1915 by Dr. Sherman of Dallas, Texas. Sold to Bill Shipley and matched at 33 lbs by the likes of Joe Peace and Red Howell, who rated him very highly. Dr. Sherman said that Boxer was the best stud dog he everman bred. – Jim Curry’s Man O’ War : A pure Colby dog that was whelped in 1914 out of Colby’s Monkey and Colby’s Bunch. Curry matched Man O’ War twice – winning over Sprague’s Hot Rock in 1 hour and 30 minutes at 36 lbs and fighting to a draw against George Armitrage’s Bob in 3 hours and 50 minutes. This match took place in 1921 at 38 lbs with Man O’ War dying afterwards, having shown he was a good defensive head dog. – Sheperd’s Black & Tan : Colby bred dog sired by Colby’s Black Pete (also a B & T) and out of Colby’s Mizery. – Harry Clark’s Chance : Sired by Clark’s Red Boy and out of Armitage’s Rose. Basically a Colby bred dog. – Kennedy’s Little Joe : Was bred down from Sheperd’s Black & Tan dog, passed through the hands of many fine dogmen like Earl Tudor, Jim McKenzie and Leo Kinard. He won a match into a Mason bred dog in 2 hours and 15 minutes, and then lost a match against a dog that J. T.Collier was handling. – Buddy Anderson’s Trouble : Trouble won five matches and lost one for Buddy Anderson back in 1950’s.
He was of DeSoto breeding but his parents were never known. Trouble won over Huston’s Tuffy in 40 minutes, Saddler’s Trooper in 1 hour and 6 minutes, Truett’s Smokey in 24 minutes, Ammon’s Rusty in 21 minutes and Ed Ritcheson’s Pilot in 53 minutes. Trouble was then matched into John Barbee’s Rocky, who detroyed him in 49 minutes, puncturing his lungs in the process. Despite the punishment he took, Trouble managed to survive. – Bruce’s Jerry : Influential dog from the 1920’s that can be found in the pedigree of the Tudor’s Dibo. Jerry was sired by Bruce’s (Tudor) Turk and out of Bruce’s Lady Lou. Joe Corvino’s Gimp and shorty were both sired by Bruce’s Jerry. – Earl Tudor’s Black Demon : A big 75 lbs dog in the chain that was matched in the high 50’s . Out of Trice’s Blackie and Tim. Grand sire to Kenneth Gordon’s Red Lady, who sired Tudor’s Spike and Jeff and Ed Crenshaw’s Buck. man t – Earl Tudor’s Black Pat : a good looking 44 lb dog. – Leo Kinard’s Buck : Out of Humpery’s Fury and Mossburg’s Dusty. Buck can be found in the pedigrees of dogs like Baker Davis’ Midnight Cowboy & Chivo and Whitsel’s Stomper through Long’s Baby & Tuffy and Hunter’s Sam. – Mr. K’s Ch Seeker : A three time winner out of Mr. K’s Tex and Bup, basically invred Carver – Boudreaux lines. man – Frank Rocca’s Tanya : A three time winner of Bob Wise breeding outcrossed to Bullyson through Hudson’s Tex 2xW, 1xL. – Hodge’s Ch Brute : A 4xW, 2xL that lost one of his matches to Fletcher Chavis’ Ch Jocko. – Hekklias (Murphys) Oiler : A two time winner sired by Harris’ Eli III . – Hekklias’ Router : Out of Hekklias’ Oiler and Cybelle. – Terry Jr’s Ch Kojack : A seven time winner from Josh Hill breeding. There is also the variations of the black and tan colour like chocolate and tan. Otter’s ch Tonka Bear, Boudreaux’s 49 and Patrick’s Double T Twister are exemples of this. Dogs like Ch Chi Chi 7xW, Devine’s Little Ace, Davis’ Ch Chivo all exhibit another variation of the black and tan coat. These all have the same kinds of markings as the black and tans but the colours are all washed out and do not come out as a true black and tan coloration.
